Dhaka 5th June 2022: On the occasion of the World Environment Day 2022, Environment and Social Development Organization today received the National Environment Award 2020. This award was bestowed upon ESDO for its outstanding contribution to the development of the country’s environment.
The award was given by H. E. Sheikh Hasina, Hon’ble Prime Minister, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh at Bangabandhu International Conference Center.
ESDO is working relentlessly to ensure biological diversity since its formation in 1990. It is the pioneer organization that initiated the anti-polythene campaign in 1990 which later resulted in a complete ban of polythene shopping bags throughout Bangladesh in 2002. Since then, ESDO has been advocating continuously for the complete ban of Single-use Plastic. Due to ESDO’s continuous advocacy and negotiation, the High Court of Bangladesh has ordered the concerned authorities to prepare the ground for banning single-use plastics in coastal areas, hotels, motels, and restaurants across the country in 2021 year. Later in a hearing on 10th February 2021, the High Court of Bangladesh has ordered the concerned authorities to phase out Single-use plastic products within 31 December 2022 from the coastal area. Following the High Court’s order, the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change has issued a gadget instructing all concerned to completely stop the use of single-use plastic from 12 coastal districts of Bangladesh by 2023.
Besides plastic pollution ESDO has been working on mercury free dentistry, mercury added products, lead in paints, used lead acid battery, PFAS/POPs, Gender and Environment, Zero Waste, Phthalates in Eraser, BPA in cash receipts, etc. ESDO has achieved significant milestones on these issues.
On behalf of ESDO, Siddika Sultana, Executive Director received the award from the Prime Minister. “The emotion we felt while receiving the award can’t be describe in words. It was a very proud moment for every ESDO members who are working tirelessly for a better and sustainable future” she said. This would not been happened with the continuous support from our Board members, well-wishers, national and international organizations, community people, young leaders who have helped us with the cause and still supporting”, she added.
ESDO recognized international organizations such as Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives – GAIA, Break Free from Plastic – BFFP, International Pollutants Elimination Network – IPEN, Plastic Solutions Fund – PSF, European Environmental Bureau – EEB for their tremendous contribution.
Dr. Shahriar Hossain is the founder of ESDO. He has been working tireless for more than 3 decades to beat the plastic pollution. He is currently attending the Ad Hoc group meeting regarding plastic treaty and conveyed his gratitude to everyone.
Siddika Sultana under the guidance of Syed Marghub Murshed is working hard to make the world habitable and sustainable again and will work until there is a sustainable future for everyone.
