Launching A Study report on

Toxic Chemicals in Beauty Products: A Potential Threat to Human Health and Environment”

Dhaka, 01 March, 2016: Environment and Social Development Organization- ESDO is going to organize a Press Briefing to disclose study findings of a Study report on “Toxic Chemicals in Beauty Products: A Potential Threat to Human Health and Environment”. The event will be held atESDO’s head office, House# 8/1,Block -C, level 5, Lalmatia, Dhaka 1207 on 5th March, 2016, Saturday at 12:00 PM.

Syed Marghub Murshed, Former Secretary, People’s Republic of Bangladesh and Chairperson of ESDO will chair the Session. Dr. Abu Jafor Mahmood, Professor (Retired), Department of  Chemistry, University of Dhaka and Dr. Abul Hasem, Professor of Jahangirnagar University and Chairman of Chemical Department of  BSTI, Dr. Shahriar Hossain, Co-chair of Asian Center and Secretary General of ESDO and Study Team Leader Siddika Sultana, Executive Director of ESDO and Asian Centre for Environmental Health will be present on the press briefing.

                                                     ESDO is going to Organize a Workshop                                                                                                                                               on                                                                                 

“Reduction of Demand of Mercury, in Mercury Containing Products in Bangladesh”

Dhaka, 15 December, 2015: To focus on the baseline study findings and project completion details on “Mercury added products: country situation analysis in Bangladesh.” Environment and Social Development Organization- ESDO and United Nations for Environment Program (UNEP) are going to organize a workshop on ‘‘Reduction of Demand of Mercury, in Mercury containing products in Bangladesh”. The workshop will be held at “The Daily Star, Azimur Rahman Conference Hall,” 64-65, Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue, Dhaka on 17th December, 2015, Thursday from 10:30 am to 4.30 pm.

On Thursday the workshop will be conducted in two sessions. The first session of the workshop will focus on the baseline study findings and project completion details on “Mercury added products: country situation analysis in Bangladesh.” The Second session will be on “Practical Sourcebook on Mercury Storage and Disposal” developed by UNEP.

Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF), Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, will be the Chief Guest in the workshop.  Dr. Desiree Montecillo Narvaez, Programme Officer, UNEP Chemical and Waste Branch Division of Technology, Industry and Economics, Geneva, Switzerland will be the Special Guest of the program. Dr. Ainun Nishat, Professor Emeritus, BRAC University will be the Guest of Honor in the program and Syed Marghub Murshed, Former Secretary, People’s Republic of Bangladesh and Chairperson of ESDO will chair the Session.

ESDO is going to organize a Youth’s Human Chain  for Eliminating Lead in Paint

Dhaka, 29 October, 2015:  While observing the International Lead Poisoning   Prevention    Week- 2015 in Bangladesh, Environment and Social Development Organization- ESDO will organize a youth human chain and rally with a theme, “Eliminate Lead Paint” on 30th October, 2015 in front of the National Press Club at 10 am. The youth forming the human chain will further rally towards the Shishu Academy.

To eliminate lead in paint ‘International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week’ is globally observed every year. Each year ESDO observes this week in Bangladesh. And this year ESDO is observing this week from 25th to 30th October, 2015. ESDO mainly aims at setting 50 parts per million (ppm) as the lead limiting standard in paint by 2015, hence, eliminate lead in paint in Bangladesh by 2017. Education materials such as factsheets, leaflet and sticker containing information regarding lead poisoning will be provided during at human chain.

ESDO is organizing this human chain in association with IPEN, Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint (GAELP) and WHO.

ESDO is going to Organize a High Level Policy Dialogue on  Eliminate Lead in Paint

Dhaka, 26 October, 2016:  As a part of observing “International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week-2015”, Environment and Social Development Organization- ESDO is going to conduct a High Level Policy Dialogue at 11:30 am on 27th October, 2015. This dialogue will take place at ESDO’s Head Office in Lalmatia. Bangla version of the National Lead Report- 2015 will be launched at this meeting as well.

To eliminate lead in paint, “International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week” is observed every year. With the theme, “Eliminate Lead paint”, ESDO is observing “International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week” – 2015 from 25th to 30 October this year. ESDO aims to eliminate the use of lead in paints by 2017 and set up the immediate standard of 50 ppm by 2015.

The policy dialogue will be constituted with high officials from Berger Paints, Moon Star Paints, Roxy Paint, RAK Paint, Anchor Paint, and Elite Paints, government officials from the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF), Department of Environment (DoE) and Bangladesh Standard Testing Institute (BSTI) and ESDO officials.   Since 2009, ESDO has been working on eliminating lead in paints through creating awareness and policy advocacy. ESDO has been working on implementing ‘Lead Paint Elimination’ project in Bangladesh in association with European Union (EU) and International POPs Elimination Network (IPEN) since 2012. BPMA joined this venture with ESDO in 2013. Some large and medium paint manufacturers have already started selling lead free paints. BPMA and ESDO asked for government’s intervention in manufacturing leaded paints and create regulations specific to leaded poisons.
