Press release on ESDO’s 30 Anniversary! Committed to Toxic-Free Environment: Education, Awareness and Enforcement are the keys to Protect Nature and Life

June 6, 2020, Dhaka: Environment and Social Development Organization – ESDO urged the people and the government to ensure environmental education, awareness and enforcement of law to protect nature and life; speakers said, at an online discussion yesterday. To celebration of ESDO’s 30 years of presenting scientific and practical environmental solutions, this online discussion was organized.

Former Secretary and ESDO Chairperson Syed Marghub Murshed said, this COVID-19 is a great lesson and learning for the world, in a small developing country we have given the high cost of the environmental pollution and degradation. So this is the high time to protect our nature and life, He urge the government to create second generation of environmental leaders; he said,we need to focus on environmental education, mass awareness and proper enforcement of the law.

The discussion was participated by Prof. Abu Jafar Mahmood, Prof. Abul Hasam, Prof. Najmul Ahsan Kallimullah, Former Secretary, Dr. Mafuzul Haq, Sumsuddin Azad Chowdhury, Former, CCF Istique Uddin Ahmed, Former Additional IGP Moklusur Rahman, ESDO Secretary General, Dr. Shahriar Hossain and Executive Director Siddika Sultana. Speakers said, ESDO team and members are walking down this path to create a toxic free world for past 30 years successfully.

In June 6, 1990 under the leadership of Dr. Shahriar Hossain, ESDO started journey. As the year passed by, ESDO become the pioneer organization for ban plastic bag in Bangladesh. Since then, EDSO has achieved so many significant milestones such as, lead in paint standard, dental amalgam phase out for pregnant women and children under 15, E-Waste guideline, mercury containing skin lightening creams ban, single use plastic ban from hotels and restaurants within 2021 etc.

Executive Director, Siddika Sultana said, it is a celebration of the achievements ESDO over the last 30 years, “We couldn’t have done this without the confidence and support of our members, government, donors and partners – we know our performance is connected to them directly.” ESDO will continue do its work and they think that one day they will make a positive change to this world – a toxic free green world.
