On February 11, 2025, ESDO, in collaboration with the Arannayk Foundation (AF) and Recycle Jar Ecosystems, successfully conducted a plastic waste audit at the Karamjol Eco-Tourism Site in the Sundarbans under the PRISTINE Initiative. This vital effort aimed to assess plastic pollution in conservation areas, forests, and tourist zones, contributing to the development of sustainable waste management strategies. Youth volunteers collected essential data to trace pollution sources, while waste pickers actively participated in promoting sustainable waste management. The audit also facilitated discussions on ensuring dignity, recognition, and better working conditions for waste pickers. The findings from this initiative will help shape policy recommendations to enhance plastic waste management in eco-tourism sites like the Sundarbans. The initiative is funded by the PLEASE Project, implemented by the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP), and supported by the World Bank, with implementation assistance from UNOPS. Together, we can empower waste collectors and safeguard our environment for future generations.
