Report Launching and Media Briefing on “The Impact of Heatwaves in Bangladesh”

On July 02, 2024, Environment and Social Development Organization-ESDO hosted a significant event at the Women’s Voluntary Association (WVA) Auditorium, Dhaka. The report titled “The Impact of Heatwaves in Bangladesh: Historical Trends, Present Challenges, and Future Projections” was unveiled, shedding light on the escalating threat of heatwaves in our country.

The study examines historical trends, current issues, and future projections of heat waves from 1974 to 2024, highlighting the increasing frequency and intensity of these events due to climate change. The report provides new evidence that between 2014 and 2024, frequent and intense heatwaves with temperatures exceeding 37.8°C have become common, while cyclones and floods have caused temporary temperature fluctuations.

The event was graced by the presence of Syed Marghub Morshed, Former Secretary of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and Chairperson of ESDO. Also in attendance were Prof. Dr. Md. Abul Hashem, Former Chairman of the Department of Chemistry at Jahangirnagar University, and Dr. Mohammad Enayet Hossain, Associate Professor in the Department of Soil, Water & Environment at the University of Dhaka.
Additionally, Dr. Shahriar Hossain, Secretary General of ESDO, and Siddika Sultana, Executive Director of ESDO, along with the ESDO team and media representatives, were present to discuss the findings and implications of the report.
