Advancing Due Diligence in Bangladesh’s Textile Sector: Highlights from the 4th Container Group Meeting

The 4th Container Group Meeting was successfully organized on 26 January 2026 by the Environment and Social Development Organization (ESDO) in collaboration with the Bangladesh Institute of Labor Studies (BILS) under the project “Strengthening Due Diligence Implementation in the Textile Sector in Bangladesh,” supported by FEMNET e.V.
The meeting brought together representatives from key government ministries, including the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Ministry of Planning, Ministry of Industries, Ministry of Textiles and Jute, Ministry of Social Welfare, and the Ministry of Commerce.
Relevant government Departments and Institutions also participated the program, such as the Department of Environment, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Department of Labour, Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE), and the Public Health Engineering Department (DPHE). Public health and research institutes including the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) and the National Institute of Preventive and Social Medicine (NIPSOM) were also represented.
In addition, civil society organizations including Oshe Foundation and Agroho Society, among others, joined the discussion.
The meeting aimed to share key findings from the Community-Based Monitoring (CBM) and Worker-Based Monitoring (WBM) toolkits, and to facilitate dialogue on practical strategies to address environmental pollution, community health risks, labor law violations, and human rights concerns. It also sought to develop a coordinated progress review plan to strengthen workplace conditions for textile workers and enhance the safety and well-being of surrounding communities. This collaborative engagement with the German donor consortium marks an important step toward strengthening accountability and responsible practices in Bangladesh’s textile sector.
