Bangladesh Goes First in Asia to Identify and Recognize 'Mercury Free Dental Chamber'

On 28 January, 2018 Environment and Social Development Organization and Bangladesh Dental Society in collaboration with World Alliance for Mercury-Free Dentistry and Asian Center for Environmental Health  inaugurated the inauguration program of  ‘Mercury-Free Dental Chamber’ identification and recognition as a part of their vibrant campaign to ban mercury from dentistry in Bangladesh.
The inauguration program started by recognizing a dental chamber named ‘Dental Center’ in the capital city Dhaka  as  ‘Mercury-Free’.  Dr. Md. Mosharrof Hossain Khandker, the principal dentist of the dental chamber was provided with a sticker logo denoting ‘Mercury-Free Dental Chamber’ for his chamber.
ESDO in collaboration with BDS has started their mercury-free dentistry initiatives in Bangladesh since 2013. In line with this, dental chamber visit and mercury-free dental chamber declaration is an worthwhile approach to encourage dentists for practicing mercury-free dentistry as well as to let people know the best choice for them is mercury-free dental treatment. After visiting a good number of dental chambers in country the mercury-free dental chambers will be awarded certificate through a prestigious ceremony. The main objective of this dental chamber visit initiative is to make an ultimate call for the ban of mercury amalgam in dentistry.
 Earlier in 2017, BDS declared and set target to phase out dental mercury amalgam by 2018 in Bangladesh. On may 6, 2017 in a workshop entitled “Mercury-Free Dentistry: Way Forward” this declaration was made.

The UN Environment Assembly, the world’s highest-level decision-making body on the environment, have gathered in Nairobi, Kenya, from 4-6 December 2017 under the overarching theme of pollution. The third session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-3) opened on Monday at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON). Dr. Shahriar Hossain, Secretary General and Siddika Sultana, Executive Director of ESDO participated in UNEA3.

After adopting the agenda and organization of work, delegates heard opening statements before convening the Committee of the Whole (COW) to review the status of decisions and resolutions to be forwarded to the Assembly for adoption. At a parallel plenary session, country representatives presented national statements. In the afternoon, delegates convened informal consultations to move forward on outstanding decisions and resolutions, but did not manage to reach agreement on all draft texts. The COW plenary convened late into the night.
