On December 19, 2024, the Environment and Social Development Organization (ESDO) conducted a comprehensive plastic waste audit in Mongla, Bagerhat, as part of the PRISTINE (Plastic Reduction Initiative in Sundarbans Transboundary International Natural Ecosystems) initiative. This critical effort aimed to identify and address plastic pollution hotspots, protect the Sundarbans ecosystem, and advocate for the rights and dignity of waste pickers.
Key Activities and Highlights
- Plastic Waste Audit: Youth volunteers collected data from key pollution hotspots, including markets, riverbanks, and tourist areas, to identify sources of plastic waste and develop targeted solutions.
- Community Engagement: A vibrant rally and human chain were organized to raise awareness about sustainable waste management and the importance of waste pickers in recycling and reducing waste.
- Advocacy for Waste Pickers: Discussions focused on strategies to ensure the dignity, rights, and recognition of waste pickers, who play a vital role in waste management and environmental conservation.
Why This Matters
The Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is under threat from plastic pollution, which harms its unique biodiversity and ecosystems. By addressing plastic waste and empowering waste pickers, we can:
- Protect the Sundarbans and its wildlife
- Promote sustainable waste management practices
- Improve the livelihoods and dignity of waste pickers
Our Commitment to a Plastic-Free Future
The PRISTINE project, supported by the PLEASE Project (implemented by the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP), funded by the World Bank, and supported by UNOPS), reflects ESDO’s dedication to creating a cleaner, greener future.
