The Inception Workshop on “Addressing Children’s Environmental Health with a particular focus on Lead Poisoning in Bangladesh” organized by ESDO and supported by UNICEF Bangladesh concluded successfully on April 3, 2024.
The event aimed to significantly reduce lead exposure among children in Bangladesh through a multi-pronged approach, including community education, policy reform, and environmental management. Key objectives were achieved, including:
Thorough understanding of the current state of lead exposure and major sources of lead poisoning in Bangladesh.
Development of a comprehensive strategy incorporating prevention, education, and policy advocacy.
Initiation of the identification and formalization of informal sectors associated with lead-based products.
Advocacy for environmentally sustainable practices and the importance of implementing Green taxes.
Engagement and dedication of government officials, securing their collaboration for successful project execution.
The workshop served as a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and planning, ensuring a coordinated approach to tackling lead poisoning. With consensus reached on vital strategies and follow-up mechanisms established, the event sets a solid foundation for significant impacts on children’s environmental health.
Mr. Saber Hossain Chowdhury, MP, Honourable Minister of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change graced the event as Chief Guest. Syed Marghub Murshed, the esteemed Chairperson of ESDO and former secretary of the government of Bangladesh, presided over the event.
Dr. Abdul Hamid, Director General of DoE, S M Ferdaus Alam, Director General of BSTI, Keya Khan, Director General (DG) of Department of Women Affairs, Anjir Liton, Director General of Bangladesh Shishu Academy, SK Rafiqul Islam BPAA, Chief Controller of Office of the Chief Controller of Imports & Exports graced the event as Guest of Honor.
Government officials, industry representatives, environmental and public health experts, stakeholders from different sectors and academicians were also present at the event and given their valuable contributions.
