ESDO’s Statement to Ad hoc Open-ended Working Group (OEWG) on a Science-policy Panel

The resumed first session of the ad hoc open-ended working group (OEWG) on a science-policy panel to contribute further to the sound management of chemicals and waste and to prevent pollution is currently taking place in Bangkok, from 30 January to 3 February 2023.

On behalf of ESDO and as a participant organization of IPEN, Executive Director of ESDO Siddika Sultana intervened on the 30th January session focusing on an integrated technique that would concentrate on the pollutants associated with chemicals at all stages of their lifecycle.

In its resolution 5/8, the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) decided that a science-policy panel should be established to contribute further to the sound management of chemicals and waste and to prevent pollution. UNEA further decided to convene, subject to the availability of resources, an OEWG to prepare proposals for the science-policy panel, to begin work in 2022 with the ambition of completing it by the end of 2024.

The first session of the OEWG is being held in two parts. The first part took place on 6 October 2022 in Nairobi in a hybrid format, and the resumed first session (OEWG-1.2) is being held in person at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, from 30 January to 3 February 2023.
