ESDO and GAIA are going to organize jointly a Side Event at the CoP28 titled “Mitigating Methane Emission Towards Environmental Justice” on 11 December 2023 at CoP 28 Bangladesh Pavilion: B2, Building 21, Dubai, UAE.
This event examined the causes of methane emissions from the farm and municipal solid waste sectors, presenting first-hand accounts from those pioneers who are leading the way in finding ways to lower methane emissions from Bangladesh’s waste sector.
The side event also introduced “The Environmental Justice Principles for Fast Action on Waste and Methane”, a document that was co-developed by Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) and 99 civil society organizations from 41 different countries. This will be put into Bangladesh context through a discussion with panelists from the Bangladesh government and other experts.
Mitigating methane emissions in Bangladesh requires a comprehensive approach that incorporates both zero waste strategies and environmental justice principles addressed by Dr. Shahriar Hossain, Secretary General of ESDO, at COP28.
🪹Composting organic waste instead of dumping in landfills, we can lower greenhouse gas emissions. Subsequently, our farms’ and gardens’ healthier soils and plants are better equipped to take up and store carbon from the atmosphere when we add completed compost to them. Here ESDO’S interventions includes; Promoting Organic farming, Training the farmers about crop rotation and mixed crop system and, using cow dung, a major source of methane emission to produce Biogas.
Dr. Farhina Ahmed, Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh graced the event as Chief Guest. Dr. Ainun Nishat, Emeritus Professor, BRAC University and Director of the Center for Climate Change and Environmental Research (C3ER) was the Guest of Honor at this event. Sanjay Kumar Bhowmik, Additional Secretary, MoEFCC, Bangladesh, Shibu K. Nair, Regional Organics Campaigner, GAIA Asia Pacific, and Hemant Mallya, Fellow, Council on Energy, Environment, and Water, India participated at this side event as the panelists.
