Historic Step Forward in the Global Fight Against Plastic Pollution!

Today at the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5.3) in Geneva, governments from around the world chose a new Chair to lead the global plastics treaty process: A crucial rebuilding moment for negotiations aimed at ending the plastic pollution crisis.
🇨🇱 Ambassador Julio Cordano of Chile was elected to this vital role, with strong support from diverse nations committed to advancing meaningful action.
While this session focused on leadership and organization rather than negotiating text, the election of a new Chair marks renewed momentum for concluding a legally binding international plastics treaty that protects our environment and human health.
🚨 The world produces hundreds of millions of tonnes of plastic every year, much of it leaking into our oceans, rivers, soils, and bodies. Without a strong global treaty, plastic pollution will continue to escalate, threatening ecosystems, food webs, and frontline communities, especially in vulnerable regions like South Asia and the Sundarbans.
📢 Our message from Bangladesh:
We cannot wait. Plastic pollution is already destroying livelihoods, harming biodiversity, and undermining human rights to a healthy environment. We call on all countries and stakeholders to:
✔️ Commit to an ambitious, enforceable global treaty
✔️ Address plastic production, not just waste
✔️ Ensure justice, equity & sustainable transitions for all
