Where does Lead hide?

Lead is a toxic metal that damages the brain and body silently. In Bangladesh, almost 40% of children under five have lead levels above the WHO threshold (5 µg/dL), facing continuous exposure through everyday items.

1. Informal Lead-Acid Battery Recycling

Unregulated open-air recycling of these used batteries is the major source of lead pollution in Bangladesh, releasing toxic dust into surrounding neighborhoods.

2.Lead-Based Paint

Aging, flaking paint breaks down into dust, which young children easily ingest through their natural habit of putting hands and toys into their mouths, absorbing up to 4–5 times more lead than adults.

4.Plastic Toys

Aging, flaking paint breaks down into dust, which young children easily ingest through their natural habit of putting hands and toys into their mouths, absorbing up to 4–5 times more lead than adults.

5. Adulterated Tumeric and Spices

Harmful chemicals like lead chromate are illegally added to turmeric to enhance color and weight,

with research showing lead concentrations exceeding national limits by as much as 500 times.

6. Other Common Sources

Lead is far more hidden in our daily environment than we realize, commonly found in items like drinking water pipes, aluminium or ceramic cookware made from metal scraps, and lead-based jewelry. Because there is no safe level of lead exposure, raising awareness and taking urgent preventive action are essential to protecting children’s health and futures.
