Dhaka, 30 July, 2019: Considering the serious health and environment impact, mercury dental amalgam needs to be banned as soon as possible. An awareness and consultation workshop on “Harmful effects of Mercury amalgam on health and environment” was jointly organized by Department of Environment (DoE) and Environment and Social Development Organization-ESDO demanded the ban of dental amalgam for the sake of public health and environmental protection on Tuesday at auditorium, DoE, Paribesh Bhaban, Dhaka. The workshop was organized in the line of creating public awareness and ratification of Minamata convention on Mercury in Bangladesh. Former Secretary of People’s Republic of Bangladesh and the Chairperson of ESDO, Syed Marghub Murshed was the Chief Guest. The workshop was chaired by Dr. A.K.M. Rafique Ahammed, Director General, Department of Environment, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. as Special Guests- Dr. S.M. Munjurul Hannan Khan, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Major General Dr. Golam Mohiuddin Chowdhury, Consultant Dental Surgeon General, Directorate General of Medical Services, Bangladesh Armed Forces; as Guest of Honor, Secretary General of BDS, Dr. Humayun Kabir Bulbul; Project Director of MIA Project, Department of Environment, Masud Iqbal Md. Shameem; Dr. Shahriar Hossain, Secretary General; Siddika Sultana, Executive Director of ESDO; Executive members of BDS and dental professionals were present at the meeting.
